Grapple is a game mode unique to the HTML5-based Bonk.io, being present since the Alpha version of it (known as the Bonk 2 Alpha). The gamemode allows players to hold onto a platform with a rope for a limited amount of time.

Upon pressing the Z key (or the player's preferred "Special" key), the player will attach itself to a nearby platform with a rope. The player grapples onto the nearest platform that is inside a specific radius around the player. The size of this radius will vary depending on the map size. However, the larger the player is, the larger the radius is.

Using the grapple ability decreases the player's "charge", which is indicated as a circle around the player. When a grapple charge is completely used up, the circle around the player will become red and they cannot use the grappling function for a few seconds. After this, their grapple charge will be usable again, but will start from zero charge and refill over a few seconds. If a player touches another player while they are using grapple, they immediately lose all of their grapple charge and turn red.

For a time, there was a short delay between pressing the "Special" key and the player grappling onto the nearest platform, even though the platform was inside the grapple radius. This could be caused if the platform was very small or if there was a Capture Zone between the player and the platform. With help of the grapple community, Chaz fixed this delay by January 28, 2021, which made the mode more reliable and consistent.

Notes[]

  • Players cannot grapple onto Capture Zones.
  • In the Bonk 2 Alpha, this mode was called "Swing" and was a feature that could be enabled within the Map Editor, instead of being a different gamemode.
  • There previously were two different variations of this mode: Grapple and Grapple Proximity. On June 15, 2020, the old Grapple mode was removed because of its unpopularity, and the Grapple Proximity mode was renamed to Grapple.
  • In the former Grapple mode, the player could only grapple onto a platform that was touching one of the two points around the player that were on opposite sides (which are shown on the screen). The orientation of these two points was always equal to the direction of the player's velocity.
  • In the map Editor, a player can choose for a certain shape to be no-grapple. This made platforms not grappleable, so if a player presses the special key button, the grapple will not attach to that platform.
  • Inner grapple is also a feature in the map Editor. If you enable inner grapple, it will allow players to only grapple the edge of the platform instead of the inside of it.
